Here's another MODERN SOUND recording. Modern Sound was a downmarket record label that recorded cover versions of popular hit songs, and re-sold them at a low price. Consumers who didn't care if the songs were by the original artists could get a "greatest hits" compilation of songs they liked without having to pay more for the actual hits. Some of these cover versions, always put together by nameless studio musicians, were pretty faithful to the original. Others, not so much. This is an example of the latter where, frankly, it's just not very listenable if you know the original version by heart. Not to mention the whistler on the title track being laughingly out of tune. 0:00 Winchester Cathedral 2:29 Dandy 4:30 Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter 7:25 Little Red Riding Hood 10:16 Leaning On The Lamp Post 12:57 Homeward Bound 15:28 If I Were A Carpenter 18:00 The Hair On My Chinny Chin Chin 20:31 Wolly Bully 23:02 Poor Side Of Town There are a few sparse credits on this one: Producer: WILLIAM BEASLEY Recorded: SPAR RECORD STUDIO Cover Design: GARY VON ILG Compatible Mastering: COLUMBIA RECORDING STUDIO This collection of songs seems to be a hodge podge of British and other international hits, although honestly, some of them I'm not actually familiar with. However, there are a few laughable moments throughout, like the fake British accent in "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter". I say fake, because most MODERN SOUND recordings state they're created (or at least pressed) in Nashville, Tennessee. And, if they're using good studio musicians, that would stand to reason. The internet isn't turning up a year of release for this one, but since the "hit" version of the Title Track by The New Vaudeville Band was released in 1966, I'm guessing this would have been rushed out in the early part of 1967. The pressing quality of this recording was surprisingly good. The vinyl version I paid a buck for at Variety Record Shop on the square in Columbia, Tennessee was clean, and after de-clicking the minor scratches with Izotope RX, the record itself sounded pretty decent. You'll probably only listen to this album once - like I did. That was enough. There's nothing here making you want to come back for more. Perhaps that was the reason the vinyl was so clean, even 57 years after its manufacture. As is often the case with these dusty discoveries from the 1960s, the back jacket copy goes in to great detail about how the stereophonic fidelity is so great, but is also backward compatible with mono record players. And, this one also has the usual MODERN SOUND blurb about how they can sell their records so cheaply: "Dear Customer: Every MODERN SOUND album is a quality product. Do not be misled by the low price. All of our recordings are made in the finest studios in the country, using many of the same musicians and background singers that are available to you on higher priced recordings on other labels. Our albums are pressed on the finest material available and in our own plant which is one of the most modern in the country. All of the recordings are new productions featuring the very latest techniques. Because of our mass distribution facilities, we are able to make MODERN SOUND albums available to you at a very modest price. MODERN SOUND albums are long wearing, break-resistant, and filled with pleasure. We hope that you will be one of our regular customers." And, let's not forget the nice sexist blurb on the back cover: "It can be said, with some authority, that the taste of the American record buying public is in many ways like the mind of a woman. It is subject to radical change at any time. In a day and age when Rock & Roll covers the best selling charts like a blanket, along comes WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL directly out of the Roaring 20's with a megaphone voice and an over all sound that you just would not believe. WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL has become the fastest selling single record in years. We think you will have a ball with our version of this novelty his as well as the other nine selections that make up this MODERN SOUND ALBUM."
