The Government has announced a new “express lane” for supermarkets to speed up resource and building consents, in a bid to increase competition in New Zealand’s tightly held grocery sector. Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis says the move is designed to give new players the confidence to invest, with Costco already confirming it sees opportunities for more stores. The announcement comes as forecasts show New Zealand’s GDP growth set to outpace Australia in the next two years, according to Westpac senior economist Satish Ranjit. Commodity exports, especially dairy, are helping fuel the recovery. But high demand and limited supermarket competition continue to push up grocery prices. The new fast track process aims to cut through the regulatory delays that have put off major international retailers like Aldi. Political Correspondent Zane Small reports.
