In this video we provide a short summary of the positioning of Malta in the global cannabis arena. Malta is often seen as a springboard into the EU Zone if GMP facilities are co-packing or extracting on behalf of a client. We discuss the switch to depenalization reform initiated in 2015 with a process of fines and rehabilitation preferred over criminal prosecution. In March 2018 Malta initiated the process of legalizing medicinal cannabis available on prescription, it also allowed for licensed cultivators and extractors in the region via Chapter 578 of the Laws of Malta. In December 2021, Malta legalized responsible adult-use (recreational) cannabis, via a non-profit social club model along with home cultivation allowance. The regulation around supply and best practices for the social clubs is still undergoing definition in 2022, but hopefully this will be resolved soon. We do know that potentially up to 7grams of cannabis can be carried by an adult per day. Regarding home cultivation there will be an allowance for up to 4 plants per household. Malta Enterprise actively works to promote business advancement for cannabis businesses in the region and we have seen Medcann World Forum / Plant Medicine Week become a regular occurrence in the region bring cannabis professionals together. Prominent industry players in Malta include: Materia Malta, Alvit Malta, Pharma MT, Panaxia and others where often the focus is on GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) packing and GMP extraction services for flower sourced from GACP cultivators (Good Agricultural Collection Practices). With an INCB (International Narcotics Control Board) estimate of 3,600kg we know Malta is strongly focused on driving cannabis based activities in the region.
