Drive out to High Shoals Road along the Rocky River in Anderson, South Carolina, and you’ll eventually spot a one hundred and ten year old truss bridge located parallel to the newer concrete crossing. This truss bridge was built in Virginia in 1919 and originally stood as a crossing near Charleston, but was moved to Anderson in 1952. It has sat, abandoned since 1987 when the new bridge was constructed. The details of the bridge’s story are a bit hazy: many say that once, a distraught mother stood at the center of the bridge and threw her crying baby into the raging River below. Immediately overpowered by guilt and grief, the mother leapt from the bridge as well and both drowned in the water below. It’s said that if you visit the bridge late at night, you may see the haunting figure of the mother searching for or trying to soothe her crying baby. You may even hear the faint cries of the baby itself. When the bridge was open to car traffic, many claimed their cars would stall or head lights would flicker out if they stopped in the middle of the bridge at night. Perhaps they shut down the old crossing and erected the new concrete structure in hopes that these paranormal occurrences would cease. Whether the stories are true or not, this bridge does certainly seem to give off a feeling of melancholy when you gaze at it. So what do you think? Do you believe Anderson’s Crybaby bridge might actually be haunted? And more importantly - would you visit the bridge at night to find out?
