In our passage today, we know God fulfilled the promised son, Isaac. He has a role in the command of God to Abraham. First, let’s back up and catch up on what’s happened between where we left Abraham last week and today’s passage. More testing, trials, failures and successes are witnessed in Abraham’s journey between Genesis 12 where we began with Abram. Many of which we covered in the previous two weeks. I could labor through the various missteps that took place, I won’t today. However, I encourage you (if you haven’t already) to read the account between Genesis 12 and our passage today from Genesis 22. Instead, let’s look at a few key events where God was with Abraham and God kept His promises. First, after Abram and Lot separated; Lot was captured due to a war between kings in the region. God enabled Abram to successfully free Lot and take spoils. In his gratitude and praise for God’s protection and provision; Abram gave a tenth of the spoils to Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High. (Yes, this is the first recording in Scripture of giving a tenth and where we get the word tithe. This didn’t become law until Moses.) Even though Abram would make more mistakes, Ishmael anyone, God continued to encourage Abraham and bless him with His presence, provision, and protection. Their relationship was such that God shared what would happen to Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham interceded for the righteous which ended up only being Lot and his family. Again, forgetting that God is protecting him, he again lies about who Sarah is, saying she’s my sister to King Abimelech. God warned Abimelech in a dream saying he is a dead man! Hello! God told the king that He kept Abimelech from sinning; how’s that for protection?! Again, God ensured Abraham’s protection and provision. God will see His plans through and the promises He has given fulfilled! Finally, Sarah conceives and Isaac is born! Twenty-five years after God told Abram he would have an heir. Twenty-five years of learning, growing, testing, trials, and hard places later; Isaac has arrived! What's the Holy Spirit say to me right now about the promises God has kept for me? Will I choose the Way of Jesus that leads to a full life or will I choose my own way? Blessings & Peace, Pastor Robert
