Ten years after his wife Janie’s death, trial lawyer and novelist Jake Burns fulfills her last wish by reuniting their closest friends from Yale, many of whom haven’t seen each other since her funeral. Once part of a prestigious secret society in the early 1980s, the group now arrives in New York as accomplished, yet complicated, adults: a mogul with his ambitious actress girlfriend, a struggling writer and her alcoholic husband, a former actress turned powerful but unfulfilled agent, a devoted doctor with a cautious spouse, and a sharp-tongued journalist still chasing excitement. With the help of his young executive assistant Averil, who harbors feelings for him, Jake orchestrates a weekend of confessions and reckonings, recreating the society’s old rituals.
