Over the river and through the woods to Ix K’ab’al Xoc’s palace we go! Yaxchilan was a large and important Maya city situated along the Usumacinta River which today forms the border between Guatemala and the Mexican state of Chiapas. First settled in the pre-classic era, it became a strong regional power controlling trade along the river. A single dynasty ruled it for almost 400 years over the course of 19 kings and queens, who recorded their exploits on stone lintels scattered throughout the city. Join me as I search for these lintels deep in the jungle, and examine some of the most interesting buildings in Yaxchilan.
