Jerry Yarnell breaks down the single most overlooked foundation in painting: Composition. In this first session, Part 1 of 2, of Jerry Yarnell’s 3 hour Composition Workshop from the Inspiration of Painting PBS television series, Jerry explains the building blocks every beginner MUST know. Before you ever pick up a brush, Jerry shows you how to plan your subject, arrange objects, choose atmosphere and time of day, design eye-flow, and build powerful L-shaped, triangle, and center compositions and much more! 🎨In art, “composition” means: How you arrange all the visual elements in your painting or drawing so that they’re pleasing to the eye and keep the viewer’s attention. That’s the short version. If we say it in Jerry language, it’s: 🙏The arrangement of objects on your canvas (or paper) so the viewer’s eye stays in the painting, has a clear focal point, and doesn’t get confused or run off the edge. Good composition usually involves things like: ▶ Subject & focal point – What’s this picture about, and where do you want the eye to land first? ▶ Eye flow – How the viewer’s eye travels through the painting (paths, diagonals, L-shape, triangle shapes, etc.). ▶ Balance – Not too heavy on one side, not empty on the other. ▶ Negative space – The shapes around and between objects, not just the objects themselves. ▶ Value & color relationships – Using light/dark and color contrast to support the focal point. ▶ Depth & perspective – How things are placed to create a sense of space and distance. ▶ Eye stoppers – Little elements that keep the eye from “falling off” the canvas and nudge it back toward the center of interest. So when an artist talks about “working on composition,” they’re really talking about planning the design of the painting—where everything goes, how it connects, and how it feels—before they worry about fancy brushwork or color.
