Driving Foothills Parkway East Tennessee offers some amazing scenic views of the Smoky Mountains, and one day it might be one of the best Appalachian Mountain Roads. This video, however, is about the controversy of its long construction. 76 years to be exact. And it's still going. No, construction is currently at a stand still. But back in 2018 a new section was opened to the public thanks to federal money released during the recession.The Foothills Parkway was envisioned as a 72-mile two-lane scenic mountain road that traverses the western and northern perimeter of Smoky Mountain National Park. It’s also to intended to provide perfect access to Tennessee vacation destinations that were already well established by the 1940’s. You know, places like, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg. The story of the Foothills Parkway is forever linked, for better or worse to my favorite mountain road in the world, The Blue Ridge Parkway. There is an interesting relationship between Blue Ridge Parkway and Foothills Parkway. But here’s the thing, the Foothills Parkway isn’t finished, and it won’t be for another 20 years! What’s the hold up? Of the seven Congressionally Mandated Parkways, the Foothills Parkway is the only remaining parkway yet to be completed. Foothills Parkway was envisioned to begin at Chilhowee Lake in Tennessee, and end at Cosby, Tennessee. **** There are a few goofs in this video regarding when certain sections of the Parkway opened. I have the right decade, but there is a section mentioned that opened, and then it closed. However, this issue, and some other minor issues that I learned after posting, doesn't detract for the overall narrative of the video. ****Environment In response to any comments regarding the environmental impact completing the Foothills Parkway. Road construction anywhere impacts the environment negatively. As with anything else, we weigh the cost and the benefits. Though I believe the Parkway should be completed, as it is a promise that was made to the people of East Tennessee, I am not completely convinced that a completed Foothills Parkway will impact that region's economy enough to make the final decision easy. Make no mistake, maintaining, and finishing the Foothills Parkway will have an impact on the environment. However the credibility of environmentalism is damaged when environmental concerns are used as tools for political maneuvering, and posturing. All too often, environmental issues are used as an excuse to allocate resources and focus attention elsewhere. Moving forward, before roads of any kind are promised to a community, or in this case, a region, every possible environmental study should be conducted. (Which is normal these days) But this project has been in progress for 76 years (depending on when you might be reading this). It's time to finish the job. Completing the Foothills Parkway is an opportunity to increase the credibility of the Park Service, and environmental awareness. The environment is very important. But it's important to keep promises too. Let's hope Great Smoky Mountains National Park will want to acquire more friends of the environment instead of creating more enemies of environmentalism.
