1974 Saab Sonett III. It has a 1.7 liter Ford V-4 Engine. It was designed for Saab by Sergio Coggiola with some frame adjustments by Gunnar A. Sjögren to minimize costs of construction. There were 8,368 Sonett III cars built between 1970 and 1974. Most people are not familiar with the Saab Sonett. It is most often mistakened for a Datsun 240Z or an Opel GT. Sometimes, I am asked "Is that a Ferrari?" and once someone asked me "Is that a Corvette?" Surprisingly, I have had a few persons tell me that they knew someone with one or that a family member (like their dad) had one. It is small car weighing about 1700 pounds unloaded due to its fiberglass body over a steel frame. After a considerable mechanical and electrical work, my Sonett III is now ready for the road. Work done includes: new alternator, fuel pump, Petronix electronic ignition, rear drum brakes, horns, LEDs in dash and exterior signal lights, voltage regulator, battery and more. Rust was removed and repaired in the trunk floor, the cabin floor and the rocker panels. Minor fiberglass repairs were also done. Almost every electrical connection was cleaned, lightly sanded and sprayed with DeOXIT-5 to control corrosion. The brake and clutch master cylinders and slave cylinder were rebuilt alsoThe air cleaner, the steering wheel and the center control panel were repainted. The heating control valve was rebuilt and the heating system cleaned and duct work replaced. The carburetor was rebuilt about 150 times (slight exaggeration) since there was a small but ominous leak of gasoline onto the hot engine. That seems to be under control now. Soundproofing using Dynamax was done in the trunk and the cabin. Rust treatment and coating was done everywhere I could. New subflooring was put down in the cabin and topped with a black vinyl sheet. A temporary carpet was placed on top of that. A new subfloor for the trunk was also made out of plywood, painted and sealed. A temporary carpet was placed over that. Gauges were all removed, cleaned externally and tested. Bulbs were replaced with LEDs except for the alternator light - a standard bulb is needed in that location for the alternator. The next steps include: putting the nose back on the car, getting the pop-up headlights functional (not expecting a problem?!), painting the car and refurbishing the interior with new seat upholstery and permanent carpeting.
