Ghulam Mohammad Mir of Magam, district Budgam, now 78, who is commonly known by his nickname of "Moma Kanna", has arguably an unparalleled profile in Kashmir's counterinsurgency as he claims to have neutralised as many as 7,000 militants in the last 35 years. Notwithstanding the killing of several of his family members and relatives-- he claims over 100 terror attacks on him and his house on Srinagar-Gulmarg Road-- he continues to be resolute and unapologetic in developing information regarding the presence and movement of the militants and carrying out operations by the security forces. Like a many prominent counterinsurgent helpers of the security forces, he has been widely accused of getting militants and their noncombatant relatives and sympathisers killed in custody and encounters. However, he has strongly refuted all such allegations and claimed to have never killed any innocent civilian. According to him as well as the Police, there isn't a single case of atrocities or human rights abuse registered against him in any Police Station in Jammu and Kashmir. His help to security forces in getting a number of the civilian hostages-- including two Swedish engineers, Ex-Minister Khemlata Wakhlu and her husband Dr O.N. Wakhlu-- released without any bloodshed has been appreciated and recognised at the highest level in Indian. For such services and unparalleled acts of gallantry, Ghulam Mohammad Mir was awarded India's 4th highest civilian honour "Padam Shri" which he received from the then President of India, Pratibha Patel, in 2010.
