This was the middle hymn at Festival Worship for my final Sunday at Old South, 7/21/24. The reharmonization and descant on the last verse are my own. Many thanks to my colleague Mitchell Crawford, Old South's Minister of Music, and the many present and former members of the Old South Festival Choir who came this day to celebrate my 19 years of ministry together. Charles Villiers Stanford's hymn tune "Engelberg" was originally written to go with William W. How's text "For All the Saints" and was published as such in the 1904 edition of "Hymns ancient and Modern." Eventually, of course, Ralph Vaughan William's "Sine Nomine" displaced it as the tune most frequently associated with that text. Stanford's sturdy melody nonetheless was subsequently paired with many other texts, perhaps most famously with Methodist hymn writer Fred Pratt Green's 1971 text that celebrates the central role of music in worship. #OldSouthChurch #Hymns #Engelberg
