We move to eighteenth century England for today’s performance. Serving first as a choirboy at St Paul’s Cathedral London, Maurice Greene later became organist at the Chapel Royal in 1727, and even Master of the King’s Musick in 1735. To this day, a number of his choral and organ works are mainstays of the repertoire. Today’s work, the Voluntary in C Minor, is number eight from a collection of twelve voluntaries for organ or harpsichord. Published posthumously in 1779, these works typify English organ voluntaries of the time – they tend to begin slow, and then follow with a fast movement. Greene’s music demonstrates a clear Baroque aesthetic, not unlike the sound of Handel, which has a certain gravity in its writing which would not be seen in the work of his successors. Performed on the J.A. Silbermann organ at Arlesheim Cathedral, Switzerland through Hauptwerk technology. Many thanks to Kim for her excellent filming.
