Valley fever, also known as coccidioidomycosis, is a fungal infection that is contracted when soil borne spores are disrupted and inhaled. The infections can cause symptoms similar to pneumonia or COVID-19, such as cough, headache, fever and, in more severe cases, meningitis. UC Davis Health patient Rex shares his journey with valley fever and how UC Davis doctors and researchers are advancing earlier diagnosis and better treatments through clinical care and laboratory science. Established in 1908 as a university farm, UC Davis has continually branched out, challenged the way things are done, and gained recognition for solving complex problems related to health, environment, culture and society. Our 5,300-acre campus borders the city of Davis, a vibrant college town of about 68,000 people in Yolo County. UC Davis is among the most comprehensive campuses in the University of California system, with four colleges and six professional schools that offer over 100 undergraduate majors and more than 100 graduate and professional degrees. UC Davis enrolls about 40,000 students from over 110 countries and contributes at least $12 billion to the California economy each year. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, the university exceeded $1 billion in research funding for the third consecutive year, cementing its reputation as a tier one research university. Visual Description The video opens with sweeping aerial views of farmland in California’s Central Valley. Captions explain that a soil-dwelling fungus can cause valley fever, an infection on the rise. We meet Rex, a UC Davis Health patient, wearing a bright blue shirt that reads “I am a survivor.” He shares his story of getting sick, while scenes show farmland, dusty soil and his home. We see him in his kitchen handling medication and riding in an elevator at UC Davis Medical Center. Text on screen notes he turned to the UC Davis Medical Center for valley fever. Doctors and researchers appear. Dr. George Thompson, professor of medicine at UC Davis Health, speaks in his office, and lab workers in coats and masks examine samples and slides. Rex is shown sitting outside on a bench, then in a clinic where a doctor listens to his lungs and a nurse draws blood. Researchers handle stored tissue samples, and doctors review charts together. The video closes with more farmland, highways and oil fields, before ending on the UC Davis logo in bold white letters over a blue-and-gold background. #ValleyFever #CentralValley #MedicalResearch
