Hip Replacement Precautions for Back Approach | Posterior Approach

If you had a hip replacement or is planning to have a hip replacement, you might need to watch this video In order to know what to expect after your surgery. Once you have a hip replacement, there are precautions that you need to observe for proper healing and avoid hip dislocation. Usually your doctor will tell you to observe this precautions for six weeks. As occupational therapist we remind you or educate you about this precautions. For a posterior approach hip replacement, or from the back approach, there are three main precautions that you need to remember. First no bending over 90° that includes bending your trunk or bringing your knee up which makes angle of your trunk and thigh lesser than 90°. When sitting down maintain a 90° angle with your trunk in your thigh. When you are about to stand up or sit down, keep the leg with a hip replacement straight. In getting in and out the bed, use a leg lift. You don’t need to buy one. Use an old belt. Make a loop and put your foot through then used to pick up that leg keeping the knee and the entire leg straight on and off the bed. When you need to pick up an object from the floor observe the golfer stance. Or you can use a reacher. Second precaution is do not cross your legs. This will dislocate your hip more than anything else. So do not bring your leg in which you had a hip replacement across midline. You will usually see this when you are getting in and out the bed. So when you get in the bed make sure that you are scooted far enough where are you can bring your leg up without crossing the midline. Also, when you are sleeping you can sleep on your side if you have a pillow between your legs which will place your hip in neutral position. If you sleep on your back make sure that you keep your hips in neutral position as well and if you need to, put a pillow between your legs. You will also see crossing the legs when you’re putting on your lower body garments such as putting on your pants, putting on your socks or your shoes. Use assistive devices in order to do this task. Third precaution is do not internally rotate your hip. Your guide will be your foot or your knee. Make sure your foot and or your knee won’t turn in words. Usually this happens when you turn to the opposite side. So when you have a right hip replacement and you need to turn to your left, do not plant Your right leg with turning to the left. Instead, step towards the left. ================================= Disclaimer: This video should not replace the necessity of visiting your doctor or getting your occupational therapy session done.
