Fresh off the slave ship "Wanderer," they were being transported to brutal rice plantations when they rebelled. Led by their high chief, they chanted "Orimiri Omambala bu anyi bia, Orimiri Omambala ka anyi ga ejina" (The water spirit brought us, the water spirit will carry us home) and walked into Dunbar Creek together. This act of ultimate resistance became legendary in Gullah Geechee culture and African American folklore. The largest mass suicide of enslaved people in US history. In 1803, 75 Igbo men and women aboard the slave ship São José Paquete de Africa made a harrowing choice: face a lifetime of slavery in Brazil or take their own lives at sea. Bound for a life of brutality, these enslaved Africans chose death over bondage, jumping into the Atlantic Ocean rather than surrender their freedom.
