In this video I explain 3 ways you can log PIC time you may not otherwise be qualified for. They are not quite loopholes as they are legally permitted by the FARs and letters of interpretation by the FAA Chief Council, however, they are not things you might easily realize straight from the regs either. In fact two of my instructors were fooled and did not believe me at first. 1) A private pilot can log PIC time when handling the controls of an airplane that would require a complex, high performance, and/or tailwheel endorsement without having an endorsement as long as another pilot or flight instructor is qualified and acting as PIC (in the same category/class). 2) A private pilot can log PIC time without being current as long as another pilot or flight instructor is qualified/current is acting as PIC. 3) When qualified to act as PIC, the safety pilot can act as PIC and log PIC time at the same time as the pilot under the hood is sole manipulator of the controls logging PIC time. Refer to FAR Part 61.51e https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx... FAR Part 61.57a https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx... FAR Part 91.109c https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx... And FAA letters of interpretation: https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/... https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/... https://www.aopa.org/training-and-saf...
