“How was Ngāti Maniapoto to unify once more? A meeting was called consisting of thousands of kaumātua, women and children from within Ngāti Maniapoto. The gathering was held at the end of 1903, through to the beginning of 1904. Following deliberations, a covenant was formulated, and within that covenant were words I consider profound.” In the second part of this series, we look at the influence the people of Te Nehenehenui had on the appointment of the first Māori King, Pōtatau Te Wherowhero. We’ll also explore the tribal covenant Ngāti Maniapoto me Ōna Hapū Maha, that was established in a bid to unite the tribe, following the loss of several prominent rangatira.
