'Australia must break from US war machine to help free Palestine'

A Palestine solidarity rally and march on Gadigal Country/Sydney on October 26 kept up the pressure on Australia to sanction Israel and end the two-way arms trade. Raneem Emad, from the Palestinian Action Group Sydney, told the rally: “The mass media is now telling us we should shut up and put up because the bombs have supposedly stopped falling and we should stop protesting but… the Israeli war machine knows nothing about a ceasefire, about peace and keeping Palestinians alive.” Greens Senator David Shoebridge said that the Australian government has continued to help arm Israel and refused to impose sanctions because of its “craven relationship with Washington”. “Federal Labor, just like the Coalition, do what Donald Trump or Joe Biden or whoever else is in Washington tells them. “If we want Australia to be part of a global movement for a free Palestine”, he added, “we need to cancel AUKUS and break those ties with Washington.” Shoebridge urged the Palestine solidarity movement to link up with the peace movement against the war alliance with the US. “We bloody well need to change this country. We need to change the leadership of this country. We need to change the politics of this country and we need to disentangle ourselves from any connection with Israel and disconnect ourselves from the United States and and its war plans and make an independent Australia that stands for a peaceful world.” Video by Peter Boyle for Green Left.
