Megan Simpson Huberman talks to celebrated film & TV director Cate Shortland about her experience as a writer/director and her particular perspective on the female voice. Let's Talk About The F Word: Female Storytellers panel event at 2013 VIVID Ideas was presented by Screen NSW & Screen Australia. Panelists: Jan Chapman, Cate Shortland, Daina Reid, Troy Lum, Susan Cartsonis & Helen Jacey. Known for her strong directorial choices and bold visual style, Cate's work is stamped with a confident individualism. In 2004 she wrote and directed her first feature film, SOMERSAULT (starring Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington), which premiered in the Un Certain Regard programme at Cannes. Following its premiere the film won multiple Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards including Best Director and Writer and was released in over fifteen countries. Her second film LORE, for which she won the Best Director ADG Award, was included in Official Selection at Toronto International Film Festival in 2012. Cate has also directed TV series THE SECRET LIFE OF US, and mini series, THE SILENCE.
