(15 Jul 1996) Natural Sound The spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, has arrived in Britain for a week-long tour. Though it is not an official visit, he will be meeting the British Foreign Secretary, Malcolm Rifkind, and other political figures. However, the Dalai Lama's arrival has been met with opposition from a small Buddhist sect which claims he has been persecuting its supporters. The Dalai Lama flew into London's Heathrow Airport Monday at the start of his eighth visit to Britain. This trip has been organised to mark the 70th anniversary of Britain's Buddhist Society. Over the course of the next seven days, Tibet's spiritual leader will meet representatives of the government, members of the opposition and speak at meeting in parliament. He is seeking support for his campaign to free Tibet from Chinese control - the Himalayan kingdom was occupied by China in 1959. There are about 130-thousand Buddhists in the U-K, many of whom are supporters of the Tibetan cause. But there are also about three thousand members of a Buddhist sect called the New Kadampa Tradition, who say the Dalai Lama is persecuting them. Followers of the N-K-T plan to follow the Dalai Lama on his world tour with banners saying: "Your smiles charm, your actions harm."
