“A pain in the neck, a trial and a tribulation… and Vice Chairman.” If anyone knows the ins and outs of Clevedon, it’s Cllr David Shopland. With a family legacy in local government stretching back nearly a century, public service is practically in his DNA. David’s journey began in 1946 as Chairman of the Clevedon Youth Council. After serving in the TA, cadets, and national service, he returned to a town deeply rooted in his family's history. With his father retiring from local politics in the late '70s, David stepped up, continuing the family tradition and committing himself to the people of Clevedon. Professionally, the Shoplands ran the sawmills, supplying timber far and wide, a grounding in business that no doubt shaped David’s practical approach to governance. He’s a former Chair of North Somerset Council and Clevedon Town Council and now Vice Chair of Clevedon Town Council, where he candidly admits: “It’s a job to have a vision for a council, because councils change with monotonous regularity every election.” But if he had to name one? “To keep Clevedon as it always has been, a prosperous and happy place to live.” A little bit maverick, a lot experienced, and never short of an opinion, Cllr Shopland remains a passionate and tenacious voice in Clevedon’s civic life.
