Heat Air Conditioning Outdoor. So when I uploaded this video it was primarily to share on Facebook. I really wasn't expecting the views and responses I've gotten. Thank you for all the positive feedback. With that said, a lot of people have asked about specifications. I will say that this build wasn't exactly cost friendly (around $200). And now that my cat has had kittens I'm going to have to build something different. However, as far as what I used to make it: A couple 4x8 sheets of treated plywood, SEVERAL 2x2's for framing. Every wall, floor and ceiling has 1.5 inch R-7.5 Styrofoam insulation inside. It took one and a half 4x8 sheets of insulation total. Other hardware is basic hinges and latches, etc... The heated pad and A.C. unit were pretty cheap on eBay. The heater was around $10 at Wal-Mart. And the timers, thermostat, light, and power strip were all purchased between home depot, Menards, and ace hardware. All pretty basic stuff. No major wiring. It all just plugs into a power strip with an extension cord going out to an outlet.. Again, thank you for all the feedback. I'm brainstorming on a bigger house now for the new "employees". I'll try to share a video of that one as well. Update May 2022: WOW!... I haven't logged into this channel in a long time and I am shocked by all the attention this video got! Thank you to everyone for the feedback! To address some of the common feedback: Unfortunately, I don't envision a cost effective scenario where I could build and ship these. It is a large and HEAVY unit. However, I hope others are inspired to replicate or even improve upon the design. Perfecting the temperature control was a trial and error process that required a multi-plug thermostat switch and improved ventilation for the rear of the AC unit. However, I did eventually get it to run correctly and efficiently. Though I very much understand the concern, I was more worried about freezing temps and exposure when I built this shelter than protection from predators. The shelter sits on an elevated deck, right outside our sliding glass door, in a large yard that's surrounded with a 6-foot tall chain link fence, there are several trees for vertical escape, and the area is VERY lit up at night. Predators in our area are extremely reluctant to risk that level of human exposure for any reason. Coyotes typically get shot on sight in most residential proximities around here and the smaller predators are hesitant to tempt death for a "prey" that is just as equally capable of a VICIOUS counter attack. My dominant male has actually killed a mature fox outside the fence zone. He was very proud of himself and it changed my perspective regarding their vulnerability. However, to mitigate the threat risk further and provide adequate boarding for the pride I installed a pet door into my heated garage where there are 4 more "kitty condos" with heated base pads. They are located high off ground level in the rafters, but are easily accessible for the cats. The temperature in those shelters is also monitored on a central control unit. The only animals other than the cats who feel comfortable inside the fence are possums. And surprisingly, my cats consider them friends. We will occasionally have a nomadic possum come hang out (even curl up with) with the cat's for a couple days before moving on. It's a fun relationship to watch. I haven't had any raccoon's get aggressive yet, but I am keenly aware of what they COULD do and therefore monitor excess food and water closely. I want everyone to know that our cats are VERY loved and well cared for. We consider them part of our family and they do occasionally roam indoors as well. However, they honestly prefer it outside and I prefer they eliminate any rodents before they make it to the house. They seem to enjoy the job. Every cat is free to stay or leave as they desire and they have ALL stayed... I consider that as verification I am a good "boss" hahaha. I thank all of you for checking out the video!!!
