(5 Dec 1994) Nat/Sound The chairman of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff is in Israel today (Monday) for talks with military leaders. General John Shalikashvili met his Israeli counterpart, Lieutenant General Ehud Barak, in Tel Aviv. The men reportedly discussed Israeli security demands as part of any deal with Syria, before it withdraws from the Golan Heights. The US Chief of Staff received an official welcome at the General Staff Headquarters in Tel Aviv. After inspecting the troops, Shalikashvili and Barak held a working meeting. The US and Israel are reportedly considering stationing foreign troops, possibly including Americans, on parts of the Golan Heights. Israel is also thought to be seeking more US military aid. Israeli military sources said General Shalikashvili may overfly the Golan during his visit. Washington forbids official representatives from setting foot in areas under contention. Shalikashvili is also scheduled to visit an airforce base and be present during a ground exercise in southern Israel. The general's visit precedes that of US secretary of State Warren Christopher, who starts a shuttle diplomacy visit to Syria and Israel on Tuesday. Peace talks between Syria and Israel have been stalled since February over the Golan Heights. Syria says no progress can be made until Israel commits itself to withdrawing from the Golan, which it captured during the 1967 Six-Day war. So far, Israel has only offered a phased and partial pullback over several years, which Damascus has rejected. Israel insists it wants a Syrian commitment to normalise relations between the countries before talks can progress.
