Isha and Shukanto are a part of the Lifeline Foundation, founded by Dr Subroto Das, the “Highway Messiah of India”. In August 1999, Dr Subroto Das’s car hit a tree beside a highway in the night, leaving three people injured. But help arrived only after a harrowing wait of nearly five hours. The helplessness that he and two of his co-travellers experienced on that day led to an initiative that has changed the way a highway accident victim in Gujarat receives help at the earliest possible time. Dr Das launched an NGO Lifeline Foundation, which started the helpline service starting with Ahmedabad-Surat highway, and gradually expanding it to cover entire state, and also taking it to Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Kerala and West Bengal. The service is provided free of cost. He provided technical assistance for the highway emergency service ‘108’. He is now working on creating a standard protocol for treatment, and also training paramedics. He aims to train Barodians for Bystander CPR (to help a person who suffers cardiac arrest before medical service reaches), and First Aid, in another five years. Dr Das is this years Padma Shree recipient. Isha and Shukanto are associated with nation changing work of Baroda based Lifeline Foundation that pioneered Emergency Medical Services (EMS) through a universally accessible helpline number; they are championing a tectonic shift in of First Aid & Basic Life Support training and improvement of ambulances in India. Isha Popat, 28, has an academic background of Disaster Mitigation from TISS and has worked with GSDMA. Isha, also a student of Kathak, heads Lifeline’s training vertical. Shukanto Das, 22, who Mastered in Life Sciences with top honours from MS University is a 2nd generation EMS proponent working with his parents, Sushmita & Dr Subroto Das, a Padma Shri awardee for Highway Trauma Care. Shukanto, a culinary science enthusiast, works as Program Manager with Lifeline. The duo is institutionalizing Bystander CPR in India starting with their city. Actively advocating sustainable EMS, they aim to improve Bystander intervention in road accidents and out of hospital cardiac arrests.
