I found the little one banging on the back door one cold October morning last year. Figured he was too young to be out of his drey. Maybe fallen out or pushed out (?) He slept on our back doorstep then hung around our garden all day. I didn't realise he was in such a bad way at first. Limp forearm/wrist/paw. Eye injury. He could still run, fast, but could not climb high. He kept falling as he had lost the grip in his right front paw. He ate so slowly, implying a jaw/face injury which ties in with his eye. Can't take them to the vet in this country as they put them to sleep. The grey squirrels are considered a threat to our native red squirrels. I won't go into it here, but the greys get an unfair tough deal. When I realised he was suffering I kept watch over them (from predators, birds of prey, cats) and fed them food they could handle, water etc. After a few days they were gaining strength but the rest of the squirrels were scared of his eye injury and the alpha males bullied him. It was so heart warming to see Nibbles was gaining strength after only a few days. his injures became less inflamed or pronounced. He was stoic, kept returning for food, despite being warned off. I tried to keep the squirrels apart. A week later he was thriving and a month later making new buddies. He visited every day for 3 months then over Christmas he disappeared with his siblings. I miss him, he was so smilie despite his injuries and being blind in one eye. He had a beautiful energy/character. Affectionate, friendly, super bright and brave. They all have different personalities and quirks. All he wanted was to be safe and accepted by the other squirrels. I hope they are all ok together somewhere safe. Help wildlife by placing water outside all year round.
