(11 Nov 1996) English/Nat One of the most famous victims of the Vietnam war made an emotional plea for world peace Monday as America honoured its war dead. Almost 25 years after surviving a US napalm attack on Vietnam, Phan Thi Kim Phuc joined Vietnam War veterans in Washington at the annual remembrance service. A photograph of nine-year-old Kim Phuc running naked from a napalm attack made the front pages of the world's newspapers. The image of the suffering child became one of the most potent symbols of the Vietnam war. On a cold November day, hundreds of Americans attended a service in the nation's capital to pay tribute to veterans from the Vietnam War. Vietnam veterans and their children stood to attention during the national anthem, before paying close attention to the guest of honour. Nine-year old Phan Thi Kim Phuc was portrayed in a Pulitzer Prize winning Associated Press photograph immediately after a napalm attack. In an emotional introduction, Jan Scruggs of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund spoke of the devastation of napalm. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Napalm's a very terrible weapon, it burns to the skin and down to the bone. The famous photograph of a nine-year-old girl running down Highway One shows the cruelty and the ugly horror of military conflicts. She endured many years of very painful burns therapy." SUPER CAPTION: Jan Scruggs, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Kim Phuc received a rapturous welcome from the crowds as she spoke of how she survived the Vietnam War. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I have suffered alas from both physical and emotional pain. Sometimes I thought I could not live, but God saved my life and gave me faith and hope". SUPER CAPTION: Phan Thi Kim Phuc, Vietnam Survivor Kim Phuc ended her speech with an appeal for world peace. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Dear friends, I just dream one day people all over the world can live in real peace, no fighting and no hostility. We should work together towards peace and happiness for all people in all nations. Thank you very much for letting me be a part of this important day. May God bless you - thank you". After, Kim Phuc watched as other veterans paid their own tributes to both the survivors and the dead of the Vietnam War.
