We visit the National Concert Hall in Dublin an interesting building behind a very imposing looking façade. It’s situated on Earlsfort Terrace, just round the corner from the famous St Stephen’s Green in South Dublin. A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers. https://www.buymeacoffee.com/NakedIre... The place is considered the home of concert music in Ireland and as such it feels like this place has always been here. In fact it was only in 1981 that this place became a concert hall at all. Before that it had been the main building of University College Dublin (UCD) since 1908 when UCD was founded. We look at the Foyer which leads off to the various performance spaces and contains the box office and information areas, and then up on the first floor we see the black box style space called the Studio. We take a brief look at the Kevin Barry Recital Room, readying itself for a performance, and then the atrium area on the landing of the first floor with its lavish chandelier, and as we peer over the baulastrate here we look down on the John Field Room below. The John Field Room is used for recitals, receptions and pre-concert talks. The origin of this impressive building goes back to 1865, when it was constructed as an Exhibition Palace for the Dublin International Exhibition of Arts and Manufactures. The famous Guinness family bought the place in 1871 and it continued as a space for entertainment until the Royal University of Ireland moved in in 1883 and stayed there until UCD took possession. The main auditorium, seats 1200 people and is used for large scale concerts. But aside from its concertising, many people don’t realise the significance of the NCH in modern Irish History. The building was used for the first meeting of Dáil Éireann (the Irish parliament for those watching outside Ireland) after the signing of the Ango-Irish Treaty in December of 1921. In fact the treaty was ratified in this very building on 7th Jan 1922. Work began in 1978 to covert the building into the Concert Hall it is today and it opened in 1981 National Concert Hall site: https://www.nch.ie/Online/default.asp Wikipedia Site: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...
