"In this video, I take you inside Dharavi, Mumbai — one of Asia’s largest and most vibrant slums. Dharavi is a city within a city, known not just for its dense population but also for its incredible spirit, small industries, and strong community life. Join me as I walk through narrow alleys, explore leather workshops, recycling hubs, and bustling markets. Dharavi is full of hardworking people and hidden stories that show resilience, creativity, and entrepreneurship. This is the real, raw Mumbai — beyond the skyscrapers. Let’s explore Dharavi together!" DHARAVI ********** Location: --------------- Dharavi is located in the heart of Mumbai, India — between two major suburban rail lines (Western and Central), making it very central and connected. Size and Population: -------------------------------- It's often called one of the largest slums in Asia. AREA: about 2.1 square kilometers (around 0.81 square miles). POPULATION: estimates say 600,000 to 1 million people live there — making it one of the most densely populated areas in the world. History: ------------ Dharavi was founded in 1882 during British colonial rule. Originally, it was a marshy area where communities of fishermen and potters lived. Over time, it grew as migrants from different parts of India moved in for work and settled. Economy and Life: ---------------------------- Dharavi is extremely economically active — the businesses there generate an estimated $1 billion USD per year. Major industries include: --------------------------------------- Leather goods (very high-quality — some brands source from here!) Pottery (traditional techniques) Textiles and garment manufacturing Recycling (they recycle a huge amount of Mumbai’s plastic waste) Food production (papad, snacks, sweets) Culture: ------------ Dharavi is a melting pot — people from all over India live here (Tamil, Marathi, Hindi, Muslim, Christian, etc.). You'll find temples, mosques, churches, and schools all side by side. Challenges: ------------------ Housing is cramped; many homes are just one tiny room. Sanitation and clean water access can be poor in parts. Despite hardships, there's a strong sense of community pride. ❤️"Stay tuned for the next exciting video in the Mumbai series — you won't want to miss it!"❤️ ———————————————————————————— "Hey everyone!
