They are most useful in ambushes when you know the route the enemy will take and when they should arrive. This is not something you will use during a hasty ambush. These should not be used for defensive fighting positions for defending longer than 1 or 2 magazines. There is no grenade sump and even if there was the person inside can not move enough to avoid the blast force. So the person inside will be injured seriously or outright killed from a grenade. The easiest way for an ambushed mechanized unit to take out the person inside is to drive directly over the top, have the tread right over it, and start to pivot steer collapsing the hole and crushing the person inside.
