The Hanakami Cranes Collection is a series of photography prints and artworks resulting from the 2017 Hanakami Cranes And Micro-terrariums Exhibition created by artist Michael Lai. Each Hanakami (Flower paper in Japanese) Crane is handcrafted by the artist from pressed rose petals and individually photographed capturing the beauty and simplicity of the Hanakami Cranes. The Hanakami Cranes Collection Includes: 1. First light (初の光) 2. Morning flight (朝の飛行) 3. Midnight dew (夜中の露) About the Artworks FIRST LIGHT features a duo-tone Hanakami Crane made from a red rose petal. The contrast in colour of the head and the rest of the body comes from the natural colours selected by cutting a square from the petal to create this effect. The crane rests on a bed of orange and yellow petals shot on a white background to emphasize the variations in colours of the pressed flowers. The image uses the range of vibrant colours to invoke a sense of activity building up in a calm and peaceful environment, not unlike the first rays of light shining over a calm lake in summer. MORNING FLIGHT features a montone Hanakami Crane made from a yellow rose petal. Arranged on a green succulent plant, the brightness of the colour highlights the unique and highly detailed vein patterns of the flower petal. The verdant colours of the plant complements the energetic presence of the crane, thus creating a feeling of excitement and anticipation as it seemingly prepares to take off in the stillness of the morning. MIDNIGHT DEW features a tri-tone Hanakami Crane made from a purple rose petal. The delicate and complex colours are displayed on the body of the crane, created by selectively cutting a section from the petal and folded to create an interesting visual effect. To provide a sense of scale and origin, the crane has been arranged on a matching petal with the image centred on a water droplet. The pitch black background accentuates the details of individual elements in this image, achieving a sense of stillness and serenity found only in the darkness of midnight turning into light as the morning dew forms.
