Widmaier 5.0 out of 5 stars The standard against which all others are measured Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 1999 Verified Purchase Szeryng is currently, for reasons I do not comprehend, less well known than many other violinists - but he was demonstrably superior to almost all of them. He was one of the five or so greatest violinists of the century. Szeryng's Bach is in a class by itself. Nobody has Szeryg's unique combination of musical, intellectual and technical gifts that make him the perfect interpreter of the Bach solo repertiore: he has abundant strength, absolute control of the bow, perfect intonation, an uncanny sense for architecture and structure, the highest intelligence and analytic penetration, and a huge, organ-like tone. Beyond that, he loved this music more than any other. Playing Bach was always an intensely religious experience for Szeryng. That comes across in these recordings. They are not about an individual expressing his feelings or celebrating his subjectivity. They are about a great artist dedicating his entire being, talent and skills to the greater cause inherent in Bach's music. The result is overwhelming: a spectacular celebration of Bach's musical transcendence. https://www.amazon.com/Sonatas-Partitas-Jo... Ruan Harding 5.0 out of 5 stars I cannot recommend this recording without stating that Deutsche Grammophon did not ... Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 3, 2015 Verified Purchase A sublime recording. I have had copies of it at various points in my life including Canada, Italy and the UK. I had the pleasure of listening to Szeryng and meeting him in Siena in the 1980's and my mother had known him since the 1950's. This recording would probably have become the definitive recording had it not been for the jealousy of Itzhak Perlman who castigated Szeryng in life and does so to this day. This recording is proof of what breeds such sentiments from peers and professionals. Szeryngs intonation, phrasing, bowing are all unique but truly it is his 'naturalness' which makes him superlative. I cannot recommend this recording without stating that Deutsche Grammophon did not sign up performers lightly. A beautiful testament to Bach. https://www.amazon.com/Sonatas-Partitas-Jo... José Luís Ducla-Soares 5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 3, 2014 Verified Purchase Outstanding performance. Usurpassed depth of vision and clarity. "His musical civility is the opposite of Jascha Heifetz's visceral energy, or Joseph Szigeti's sonic provocation. Mr. Szeryng's precise intonation, tonal sheen and gracious phrasing, can make the knottiest music elegant. Mr. Szeryng's diplomatic ideal matches his musical style: ''I am in favor of conciliation and reconciliation and I am very much against confrontation.'' His playing seems to proclaim the universal perfectability of the world, diplomatically conciliating even the most vexing difficulties. But those musical placations can also be unconvincing. There is another quality to Mr. Szeryng's music that makes it more provocative and less diplomatic - a suggestion perhaps, that to this violinist, who has had homes all over the world, cosmopolitanism is accompanied by a sense of exile, that his sweet description of his idyllic childhood may hide other feelings as well. He speaks of World War II as if it were still taking place; he hints at the enormity of difficulties remaining despite diplomacy. In his best playing, in counterpoint to the tone of conciliation, are overtones of melancholic anxiety. Even in the best of all possible worlds - painted in Mr. Szeryng's conversation and in his playing - there may be disturbing tensions, forces which music can elegantly present but never resolve." -- Edward Rothstein https://www.nytimes.com/1983/02/27/arts/he... https://stringsmagazine.com/a-great-among-... "One of the music's great aristocrats, violinist Henryk Szeryng was a perfectionist in all things. A man of phenomenal intellect, he combined exemplary musical taste with a super-refined technique and ravishing purity of intonation."
