Christine Bérubé Martin’s path to mountain life didn’t begin with athletics or competition. It began with loss, resilience, and the long journey back to herself. Growing up in Gaspésie, Québec, Christine loved being outside. A kid who slept in tents, stayed out until dark, and felt most alive in the open air. But after the death of her mother at age ten, that part of her slowly dimmed. Teenage years tangled with rebellion, addiction, and a sense of direction lost. Decades later, on a splitboard deep in British Columbia’s Monashee’s, Christine has reclaimed the outdoors as a lifeline. Now a nurse in the Yukon balancing demanding shifts with time in the mountains, she’s learned that energy, joy, and purpose don’t just appear, they’re cultivated through the places and people that keep her grounded. This episode of Team Mountain People follows Christine at Sol Mountain Lodge during the winter solstice, where she reflects on the mountains’ quiet power to heal, challenge, and reawaken the child she once was. Her story explores how outdoor adventure can become an anchor in a busy, emotionally heavy profession. Alongside how choosing the right partners, on a hospital floor or in the backcountry, shapes what’s possible. Christine’s experience reveals that living fully is less about perfection and more about presence: finding strength in vulnerability, joy in effort, and freedom in the wild spaces that continue to reshape her life.
