Check out the subtitles: English, česky, Deutsch! The MTTF (Mean Time To Failure) is broadly considered to be a standard measure of reliability. But is it really measuring what we think? Reliability engineering is engineering that emphasizes dependability in the lifecycle management of a product. Dependability, or reliability, describes the ability of a system or component to function under stated conditions for a specified period of time. Reliability is theoretically defined as the probability of failure, the frequency of failures, or in terms of availability, and it plays a key role in cost-effectiveness of systems. The technical, statistical, and economical approach to reliability problems can get the matter only so far. There is a level, which needs to be addressed from the ethical and philosophical standpoint. And vice versa, the ethical aspects shall be accounted for in the technical and statistical solutions. It is a complex issue, it requires interdisciplinary discussion of informed people, it includes resolving of conflicting values, and it does not provide easy answers: The quick judgments and the easy answers are usually due to negligence and a lack of understanding.
