Blackhall Rocks Beach, part of the Durham Heritage Coast, is a rugged and tranquil destination known for its dramatic magnesian limestone cliffs, extensive cave systems, and a history of environmental recovery. Once famously blackened by coal waste (and featured in the 1971 film Get Carter), it has been restored to a pristine natural state and is now a designated Local Nature Reserve. durhamheritagecoast.org Key Activities Exploring Caves: The southern section of the cliffs contains the largest caves on Durham's magnesian limestone coast. Visitors can walk into many of these at low tide, but must be cautious as the tide rises rapidly and can cut off access. Wildlife & Nature: The area is a "bird-watchers' paradise" with high densities of breeding skylarks, as well as sightings of seals, dolphins, and rare butterflies like the Northern Brown Argus. Beachcombing: The beach is a popular spot for finding sea glass and exploring rock pools teeming with anemones and marine life.
