The History of Bangor Castle Bangor Castle, also known as Bangor City Hall, is a Grade A listed building located in Castle Park, Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland. The castle's history dates back to the founding of Bangor Abbey by St. Comgall in 558 AD, which was home to Franciscan friars until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1542. A mansion was built on the site for Sir James Hamilton around 1611, which was later remodelled in the late 18th century. The current building, designed by the Scottish architect William Burn in the Jacobethan style, was commissioned by The Hon Robert Edward Ward in 1852. The castle's design features an asymmetrical main frontage with five bays facing east, including a three-stage castellated tower with a corner clock turret and a pyramid-shaped roof. Internally, the mansion contained 35 bedrooms and a large salon for musical recitals. Bangor Castle has played a significant role in Irish history and remains a symbol of the country's past.
