Will I crack the whip or get cracked by it? The most common braiding pattern found on the outside of a whip is the herringbone pattern. I share with you how to form a 12 strand herringbone braid with leather. The color coded leather strands aids the learning of this herringbone braid. Leather is a suitable material to make common whips such as the bullwhip, black snake whip, or the stock whip. A well made whip has at least 2 layers in the core. On the outer layer some attention is paid to using an attractive braid. The herringbone braid is simple, attractive, and functional. In this demonstration 12 strands of leather are braiding into a herringbone pattern over a core that is uniform in thickness. Another characteristics of a well made whip is the taper. There are at least two methods in achieving a taper using the herringbone braid. First, each strand can be tapered. Second strands can be "dropped" as the whip is being made. In a later demonstration, I intend to share with you how to drop strands in a herringbone braid to achieve a taper. Background music: Pippin the Hunchback, by Kevin MacLeod
