“As the personification of sleep, Hypnos is an old and close friend. Though you may not be aware of him, because he's so self-evident. He comes by night or when you really need him the most.” The protagonist of our story could really use some sleep. He lives at night pondering about the day and tries to sleep the day away during that day. A daydreamer at night so to speak. He finds himself disappointed by real life and searches comfort in the dark or whatever the street lights can show him. He starts to converse with his own sleep. Thus entering in kind of limbo, not sure if he’s actually dreaming or awake, both energised and squashed under this toxic relation with the nightlife. Via a stroboscopic stream of consciousness, we get thrown into the mind of a character who is taunted by a conflicted personality. He is a romantic and a loner trying to escape his own reality through performance. And while doing that he is both in search of affection and solitude while being arrogant, self-centered and insecure at the same time. Via gestural abstraction in rhythm and imagery, the viewer experiences this very personal, though widely contemporary mindset. HYPNOS is an inter-medial triptych where each part both exists on it’s own and is defined by the other parts. It is an artwork, a music album and a short film. It is a collaboration between it’s three main creators: Rik Chaubet (film), Iljen Put (artwork) and Ramses Van den Eede (music). They firstly started to collaborate on the artwork and videos of Hypopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia (the first release by the band Hypochristmutreefuzz). This has led to a great admiration for each other's work. Though acting in different domains, the three share a lot artistic interfaces. The brutal décollage technique of Iljen, the rough editing work of Rik and the disassembling and reconstructing of genres by Hypochristmutreefuzz is what has driven them together. For this collaboration they took it to a next level by overlapping graphic design, music and film into an inter-medial piece of work. What you are about to watch is considered a narrative visual album. The images aren’t a mere videoclip, the music isn’t just the soundtrack: there is a dialogue between the two. HYPNOS is a disruptive experience, from childlike to nightmarish, a strobe hell of a ride.
