Follow the Lens – A year of exploring the Cariboo I’m Mark Schiemann and I’m lucky enough to live in, and to explore one of the most beautiful places on the planet... The Cariboo. So please join me as I travel the back roads and trails in my Jeep, paddle the numerous Cariboo lakes on my Kayak, tackle the mountains on my ATV, and walk the Deer trails with my dogs. All just to get a photo or two. Of what you may ask... well, All that the Cariboo has to offer. Scenery, old cabins and buildings, abandoned cars, ghost towns, small towns, even places that have almost no people at all. But my favorite thing to photograph is wildlife, and the Cariboo and this Documentary have plenty of it.. Deer, Bear, Moose, Foxes, Beavers and Rabbits.. As well as all the feathered folk, Osprey and Eagles, Pelicans and Sparrows, Red wing Blackbirds and Mountain Chickadees, the list goes on and on. But don’t think this is going to be some video filled with camera specs and Lens envy, Nope, just me and my cameras trying to document what I love.. The Cariboo. The Cariboo is a spectacular region located in British Columbia, Canada. It covers an area of 131,286 square kilometers and has a population of 66,291 as of 2023-07-01.That is approximately 1.9 square kilometers per person. It's incredibly varied terrain and ecosystems are home to a myriad of wildlife, including many favorites like Bear, Deer and Moose. Eagles and Hawks are also a common sight. When combined with it's sister region the Chilcotin, as the two areas are connected both physically and historically, you have one of the most beautiful regions on the entire planet. Reaching from the Shores of the Pacific to an elevation of 3,516 m in the Cariboo Mountains the Cariboo/Chilcotin contains over 800 lakes, including Quesnel Lake, the deepest fjord lake in the World. Add to that the Fraser river, the Nemaiah Valley, Beaver Valley, Cedar point, Chasm, The Cariboo and Chilcotin rivers.. and so many small communities like Horsefly and Likely and Barkerville and.... I don't have enough room here. Hot summers and Cold winters make it a fantastic place to visit but the same can make living here difficult. Long distances, Mosquito season, the odd 38c (100F) day in the summer, snow, ice and the odd -45c ( -49F )day in the winter all make the Cariboo a challenging place to live. It's offering of outdoor activities, beauty and wildlife can make it worthwhile.
