[Rasaʾil Readings: Episode 13] The Excellence of the Delight of the Prophet ﷺ Seeing His Lord with His Own Eyes on the Night of Al-Isrāʾ and Al-Miʿraj (حسن الابتهاج برؤية النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ربه بعين بصره ليلة الإسراء والمعراج) The Rasaʾil Readings are periodic, brief readings of short treatises on law, legal theory, and the like, from across the Hanafi scholarly tradition. Such epistles often contain many fawaʾid and tahqiqat on various issues which are important for students of knowledge. In the thirteenth session, we covered Hamawi’s (d. 1098) risala on the issue of the Holy Prophet ﷺ seeing his Lord with his eyes on the night of the journey (al-israʾ) and the ascent (miʿraj). The original livestream occurred in January 2026. SPEAKER Shaykh Tabraze Azam is a traditionally-trained educator of the Islamic sciences specialising in Hanafi Sacred Law and Legal Theory. He is the founder and director of the Irshad Centre for Hanafi Studies (https://irshad.org.uk), an educational project which seeks to rigorously train students in the Hanafi tradition, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hanafi Studies (https://johas.org), a peer-reviewed, academic journal which publishes cutting-edge research on an annual basis, and head of operations at Dar al-Imam Abu Hanifa, an Arabic-language publishing house dedicated to the revival of Hanafi texts. ORGANISER The Irshad Centre for Hanafi Studies, founded in 2019, is an institution for the research, development, and instruction of Islamic doctrines in accordance with the school of Imam Abū Ḥanīfa (d. 150/767), the largest of the four canonical Sunni schools of Islamic law (madhhabs). It provides students with an opportunity to study beginner, intermediate and advanced texts in Sacred Law and Legal Theory, and as of 2020, it also offers a full curriculum of study for dedicated students, particularly those with limited time and other commitments. The innovative programme combines the various parts of the Hanafi tradition — fiqh, qawa‘id, usul, hadith, ‘aqida, tafsir — bringing everything together into a coherent and consistent whole. The centre also publishes the Journal of Hanafi Studies (JHS) and has other publications.
