In the 1950s, most bodybuilders were proud to build 16 or 17 inch arms. That level of development was considered exceptional in the golden era of physical culture. But one man stood completely apart. Leroy Colbert became the first bodybuilder widely credited with building 21 inch arms completely drug free, a level of development that shocked the lifting world at the time. Based out of New York, Colbert developed a physique of around 200lbs at just over 5'9", and became one of the most influential figures in early bodybuilding. His friendship with Joe Weider also led to a historic moment in the sport, when he became the first black athlete to appear on the cover of a muscle magazine, breaking a major racial barrier in bodybuilding.
