In this video I will explain you on my Profession, Know about seafarers and Merchant Navy on the International Day Of Seafarers | indomariner | The Merchant Navy merchant marine or mercantile marine is the name given to the international commercial shipping industry. It is made up of several shipping companies who recruit civilians as their seafarers. King George V gave the title of the "Merchant Navy" on the British merchant shipping fleets following their service in the First World War Merchant navy is a specialized industry which is fully engaged in commercial activities involving transportation of cargo and passengers through sea routes. In plain terms through merchant ships cargos are transported from one place to other by sea The professionals working on these commercial ships are called mariners or sailors or seafarers or seamen. The field of Merchant Navy is an important part of the global shipping sector and is an integral component of any nation’s economical development. As the majority of the world’s commercial activities are carried out through the sea routes, the field of merchant navy has far more prominence across the globe. The modern shipping industry has come a long way from the olden days of ships with sails. The modern cargo ships are massive in size and are equipped with latest and highly advanced technology systems. This invisible industry and its unsung heroes play a great role in the development and progress of the global economy. Merchant navy is a global industry with several nationalities working together on different types of vessels. The industry offers excellent career opportunities both at sea and on shore. Merchant Marine strength plays a key role in determining the overall naval firepower of a given country. In war time, commissioned Merchant Marine vessels would be charged with transporting soldiers, vehicles, supplies to points anywhere in the world. The Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo all over the world. Merchant ships employ a huge number of workers to carry and deliver goods from one country to another. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would come to a grinding halt! As I said before in the tribute to the seafarers in the global pandemic covid 19 Without shipping, half the world would starve and the other half would freeze! Many people are getting confused with Merchant Navy and Indian Navy Merchant Navy is different from the Indian navy in the sense that it offers commercial services, as opposed to the Indian navy, which is largely involved in the defence of our nation. I will make video about it, Companies vary greatly in the size of ship, types of ship and areas of the world where they operate. Types of modern merchant ship include container ships, cruise liners, oil or gas tankers chemical carriers bulk carriers cable layers roro ferries car carriers oil rig supply vessels and general-purpose cargo ships. Their trade routes may take them to every continent and across every ocean on the globe. There are three main operational departments on board ship: the deck department, which is staffed by navigating officers; the engineering department, which is staffed by marine engineering officers, and also include marine electro-technical officers; and the hotel or catering or saloon department, which provides the crew and any passengers with catering and domestic services. When you consider the size of the vessels our officers serve upon, you also begin to realise just how important their role is. The longest container ship in the world is now around 400m long, equivalent to the length of four football pitches. The world’s largest cruise ship is over 360m long and can carry over 6,500 passengers. Ships operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with crew members rotating on leave after their vessel appointment has been completed. While technical officers and crew often work a system of watches each day, normally in a pattern of four hours on and eight hours off, the working hours of most hotel operations personnel on cruise ships and ferries are dependent on their guests’ routines.
