One of our most local railways here in mid Devon, a hop over to Cornwall, always friendly and welcoming - Steam gala weekend was a great excuse for a day out. Riding on trains, watching them, meeting new people and a lovely walk in the woods. What more could the dogs and I want on a sunny Sunday? (If you just want trains, skip the walk in the middle 😁). 'Join Us for the Spring Steam Gala Celebrate Railway History in Cornwall! Here's what you can look forward to: 16-18 May 2025 We’re delighted to be bringing together the classic line of GWR branch line engines; a Pannier, Prairie and Auto-tank. Not seen together for 7 years, these 3 magnificent loco types will be with us over the 3 day event as part of our Railway200 celebrations marking the bi centenary of the first passenger train. This classic line up of Great Western Branch Line locos, featuring 7714 & 1450 from Severn Valley Railway, 5553 from the Waterman Locomotive Trust and our very own 5552, were once the backbone of many Cornish branch lines. There’ll also be a first-class experience in our wonderful Victorian carriage on Saturday and Sunday as well as rides on ‘Camel’ the pump trolley, the goods train, plus behind the scenes exclusive access to our workshop. 1,2, & 3 day adult rover tickets will be available offering unlimited travel all day, and kids for a quid tickets. Over the weekend, we’ll be recapturing this bygone age of steam train travel around the county, loading and unloading typical morning freight from the era including milk churns and newspapers – once a regular sight on the region’s railways that some visitors will remember and others will never have known. The historical recreation of the classic branch line scene with the shunting of goods, working short trains and transferring light goods loads will be great to see, as will the visiting locos working the steep 1 in 40 grade. Younger visitors will also have the opportunity to talk to the drivers and help direct the shunting on Saturday with our own Port of Par loco Judy. It promises to be a fantastic event! We’re extremely grateful to the kind support of GWR in helping us to showcase these classic locos together and recreate the role of the railway in the 1950s, offering a real insight into the invaluable ways it supported our local communities.
