Conceptualized during the early 80s and created during the early 90s, the XM8 Armored Gun System / M8 AGS was the true light tank to be approved for service within the United States Army. Featuring an autoloading XM35 / M35 low recoil 105mm gun, the M8 was intended to provide troops with air deployable direct fire support against enemy armor, infantry, and fortifications. The M8 had three different levels of applique armor that could be installed after it was dropped into the field. Despite its promising performance, Congress cut all funding for the M8 just a few years after it was type classified. The M8 has been struggling to enter full scale production ever since, even to this day, where it's one of the two candidates in the Army's MPF light tank program.
