This is the standard surgical technique to repair a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid of a dog, also known as a Cherry Eye. Surgical steps: 1) General anesthesia and sterile prep of the eye 2) Place an eyelid speculum for exposure 3) Place three stay sutures using 5-0 Nylon suture and mosquito hemostat, one on either side of the gland through the third eyelid margin and one through the gland itself 4) Use these stay sutures to expose the posterior aspect of the third eyelid 5) Make an incision through the conjunctiva at the distal aspect of the third eyelid 6) Make another incision on the other side of the gland by tenting the conjunctiva overlying the gland 7) Bluntly dissect below the eye to ensure a deep pocket (this step is crucial to decrease the risk of the gland prolapsing again) 8) Use absorbable soft suture (6-0 PDS or Vicryl) and suture first knot on anterior surface of the third eyelid to avoid contact with the cornea 9) Pass suture to posterior surface and suture far end of first incision to far end of close incision via simple continuous pattern 10) When enough of the incision is closed, the gland will fall into pocket, remove stay suture through gland 11) Leave incision open slightly at both ends to decrease the risk of cyst formation 12) Pass suture back to anterior surface of the third eyelid and tie knot 13) Remove stay sutures and speculum 14) Treat with antibiotic ointment three times a day, e-collar, and rest until recheck in 10-14 days, treat with oral anti-inflammatory for 7 days 15) Third eyelid will remain red for weeks
