Whilst recovering from total knee replacement, hydrotherapy is a great way of getting your leg strong, knee moving and practice walking without crutches. Here is an example of what you could perform in the pool. 1. Knee flexion- In standing, lift your heel to try to touch your bottom. Do not let your knee move forwards. 2. Knee raises- In standing, raise your knee towards your chest as high as possible. 3. Partial squats- With feet shoulder width apart, squat as low as you can. When returning to start position, ensure that you fully straighten the knees until locked out position. 4. Side lunges- Step out to the side and bend the one knee whilst keeping the other leg straight. Try and get your bottom as low as possible. 5. One-legged partial squats- Standing on one leg, bend your knee and lower your bottom towards the floor. When returning to standing position, ensure that you completely straighten the knee until it locks out. 6. Step-ups- Lift one leg onto the step and push up until leg has completely straighten. Then bring other foot to meet it. Perform with both legs leading. 7. Sideways step up- Standing side onto step, lift nearest foot onto the step and straighten leg before lift other foot to meet it. Ensure that knee stays parallel to ankle and hip throughout exercise. Perform with both legs leading. 8.Ladder climbing- With one foot on the step 9. Walking forward- Walk across the pool forward. Ensure that you heel strike and push off from toes. 10. Walking sideways- Side step across the pool. 11. One-leg stand- Stand on one leg for as long as possible. 12. Walking lunges- Step forward with one leg and bend both of your knees. Then straighten both legs before stepping through your back leg. Try to go as low as roughly 90 degrees angle with both of your knees and touch the floor with your back knee Like our content? For more please subscribe, like and share!
