From philosophising plants to mutant deathclaws dreaming of diplomacy, the world of Fallout was once home to a surprising number of chatty animals. But where did this trend begin, and why did it all but disappear in later games? Well, one of the rarest encounters in Fallout 1 involves a simple herd of six wild Brahmin. Unlike most creatures in the wasteland, they don’t attack the player…instead, they simply say, “Moo!” or, if they’re feeling particularly eloquent, “Moo, I say!” This encounter may seem like a throwaway joke, but it actually has a deeper origin. Tim Cain, one of Fallout’s key developers, used to play a game called Darker Realms, where he had a habit of teleporting snow cows into his friend’s workroom, a story he told to Chris Taylor, who handled most of Fallout’s random encounters, and he found the story so funny that he decided to add something similar to Fallout 1 with The Talking Brahmin. And while this encounter is considered non canon, Ed a Brahmin dealer in Fallout 2 mentions that he witnessed his brahmin speak, saying “Moo, I say” which could just be a reference to the encounter, but it could also mean that there’s more of them out there, and with how crazy Fallout 76 has gotten, with alien invasions and what not, I suspect talking Brahmin will make another appearance...
