On 14th September 2025, I returned to my ancestral home in Banna Mohalla, Near Fateh Kadal, Srinagar after 35 years. I was just 15 when I was asked to leave the house on 5th March 1990, the tumultuous times that uprooted our family, community, and belief system. This visit was a spiritual journey, recalling the happiness of our big joint family before 1989-90, when everything changed forever. After the exodus in 1990, our three-story house with its beautiful attic was burned down by miscreants the mid-1990s. The property was sold for a pittance in 1995, and we no longer own it. The loss of this home symbolizes the deeper loss of our ancestral existence. I dedicate this video to my dearest Pappa, Dr. Late Krishan Narayan Mattoo, a self-made man and my Guru, who was tragically killed in a bomb blast at age 47 while serving as Deputy Director of the J&K Animal Husbandry Department. I could feel his presence strongly during this journey. I also dedicate it to my brave grandfather, Shri Shambu Nath Mattoo, son of Samsaarchand Mattoo, grandson of Sounjoo Mattoo, and great-grandson of Krishan Joo Mattoo. At 32, as Thanedaar at Chattargul (Kangan), he was taken captive and later killed (we still dont know his exact date of death, as he never returned home either dead or alive), defending his post from over 200 Afghan invaders in early July 1948, when my father was just six months old. My deepest salute goes to my grandmother, Smt. (Late) Arandati Mattoo (Ammaji, Aietee), who demonstrated extraordinary resilience and strength by raising five children alone in a joint family after losing her husband so young. Through this film, I honor each and every member of the Mattoo family, our elders, our Uncles and Aunties, cousins, and all the small joys of our childhood. These stories are part of the changing face of Kashmir, reflecting the resilience of those who have endured great loss yet continue to carry forward the legacy of our land and family. Join me in this recollection of memories, loss, and hope tied intrinsically to our ancestral home and history. #Kashmir #MattooFamily #AncestralHome #KashmiriPandit #Exodus1990 #FamilyHistory #Legacy #Resilience #PersonalJourney #BannaMohalla #Sacrifices
