To learn more visit www.answersaboutalz.org They've lived in this environment for months or even years, but all of a sudden your person has started asking to go home. Well, how do you respond when someone with dementia constantly asks to go home? The first thing to understand is just what home is. Home is a feeling of safety, of comfort, and familiarity. You can move to a new dwelling, but it will take a while for it to have those feelings that make it home. By asking to go home constantly, your person with dementia is signaling to you that they don’t have those feelings about where they are. They may be thinking of a home from their teens or their early adulthood, and it’s impossible to convince them that that place isn’t their home anymore. For whatever reason, be it a problem with someone or something, they can’t accept this current location as home. To combat this we have a few steps to help ease their mind or assist with comfort. Tip 1 is therapeutic fibbing, (Linke below) saying something like “the house is being fumigated right now, but we can go when the exterminator calls” can help ease some stress. Another idea would be to engage them with a prepared activity, (link below) something meaningful that only they could help with. Lastly, try talking to your person about their home too. Doing this will keep your person engaged and can help you learn what’s currently missing from their new living space.
