VAN BUILD SERIES 3 | Installing our rear door windows (Ram ProMaster bonded glass)

We’re so excited to share our experience of installing our back windows in the van! This was our first big DIY van build project. We were nervous about cutting massive holes in the metal, but starting with the back windows was perfect since we didn’t need to rely on a DIY template (like all of the other van conversion windows). Can you guess what the worst part of it was??? If you’re watching this because you have a RAM ProMaster and you’re planning your own van build or camper van conversion, I hope you learn from our mistakes and frustrations. lol As always, thanks for following along with our van life journey and SUBSCRIBE to stay tuned for each part of this crazy DIY van conversion process! *What we’ve learned from this project* 1. It’s unpleasant to cut through metal with short sleeves on (tiny shavings get everywhere!) 2. The thicker, wide painters tape worked better for decreasing the vibrations when cutting (unlike the smaller kind) 3. The included primer dries out quickly, so it would’ve been better to either WAIT until BOTH windows were ready (priming all at once) OR to just use a small can of clean metal primer instead with a small sponge dabber 4. The recommended edge molding MAY not actually fit the cut edges, so it would’ve helped to buy a few sizes of the edge molding & return the one that didn’t work 5. The Sikaflex adhesive was super difficult to get out of the tube, even with a strong caulk gun! Doing a test squeeze on the discarded metal piece helped. 6. Cutting holes in the van wasn’t as scary as we thought (so far) ▶️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro 0:55 Passenger side 6:38 Drivers side 10:06 Edge trim 18:19 Applying primer 22:24 Applying adhesive 26:15 End result 🧰 MATERIALS USED -AM Auto Ram Promaster rear door bonded glass windows x2 -TRIM-LOK edge trim/molding: 1/8” edge x 7/16” leg length (DIDN’T FIT) -1/4” edge molding (did fit) -Sikaflex P2G polyurethane adhesive/sealant x2 -Caulk gun w/ 26:1 thrust ratio -Betaprime primer tube (came with the window installation kit) -8oz can of Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer (in white) -Paint mixing stick -Sponge dabbers -Drill w/ various drill bits -Jigsaw -Jigsaw blades for cutting metal (needed the fine tooth ones w/ a screw hole) -Extension cable -Original or Pro ScotchBlue painters tape (we used the Sharp Lines one first; not strong enough) -Metal file w/ fine & course sides -Hammer -Pliers -Clamps (to help hold the edges together for the trim) -Sharpie marker (for drawing the cut line) -Measuring tape -Latex gloves -Acetone w/ paper towels (for removing spilled primer) -Protective goggles/glasses, work gloves, and masks -Vacuum or shop vac -Garbage bags (for covering holes and windows in the rain) -Our own checklist of the steps 🙂 Instagram: @routestoroots.life Facebook: @routestoroots.life -------- 🎵 Music licensed from Lickd.
